Katana Maintenance

Cleaning a Katana/Sword starts with the right maintenance kit. The use of incorrect materials for cleaning the Katana could damage it.

Oil:

The oil protects the blade of the Katana from rust and corrosion. However, not just any type of oil is suitable. We recommend the lubricating oil often used for sewing machines,

Cloth

Two cloths are needed, preferably 100% cotton, as it is a soft fabric that removes dust and Katana oil without leaving lint.

Oil and Cloth for Cleaning:

To clean the Katanas, at least two pieces of fabric are needed. Use one cloth to remove oil from the blade and another to apply it again.

How to Clean a Katana

Here are the steps to clean a Katana.

  • Remove the Katana/Sword from the scabbard.
  • Use a piece of cloth to remove old oil, dust, and any fingerprints on both sides.
  • Apply a few drops of oil to the blade.
  • Use the second piece of cloth to gently distribute the oil evenly and absorb any excess oil residues.
  • Be careful not to touch the blade with your fingers as the pH of the skin can damage the blade, causing it to rust over time.

Tips for Cleaning and Maintaining a Katana

  • To clean and polish, avoid aggressive chemical products that can damage the blade.
  • Always use a clean cloth, free of lint and soft. Touching the blade with bare fingers can leave residues on the blade and cause corrosion.
